MISSION
FFAMM, Inc. contributes to positive social change through capacity-building and civic education for people of African-ancestry. We support family-building by creating opportunities for like-minded individuals to work together toward mutual goals. The greatest of which is the preservation of faith-family values for Black-diasporans.
OUR INSPIRATION
Morufu & AssisatAs proud Nigerians, Assisat & Morufu have created quite a life together, over the past 20 years. Assisat owns a home health agency and Morufu started the largest minority-owned dialysis company, in the United States.
While Morufu was working as a young physician in the United Kingdom, he decided it was time for him to get married. He'd met Assisat in her father's home when they were younger and had always known that she was the wife he'd choose. When she used to serve their awkward and talkative guest, she had no idea he was interested in her. Once he found her and made his intentions known, she too realized that who she once thought was "just a guy", was actually the man of her dreams. They say: "Raising our three children has given us the motivation to be the best examples of husband and wife, for them. Allah has gifted us with many trials, and the strength to overcome them. We are very happy to have traveled this journey together. " |
Abdul-Hamid & MahdeyahMahdeyah and Abdul-Hamid are foodies to the core. They credit their love of experiencing and experimenting with new cuisines as one of the factors that keeps them so "into each other".
They love to fuse new cultural influences with family recipes that they find on their travel as avid hikers. It is important to them to preserve the foods of our collective memories with maintaining good health. They met and married nearly 20 years ago while Mahdeyah was living in England and Michael was in the U.S. They decided to marry after a very brief introduction and courtship. Now, they live in the metropolitan D.C. area with their three children. They say: "What keeps us going is the knowledge that God is in control of everything that happens in our lives. WIthout that knowledge and the faith that living according to God's purpose requires, we would be very far apart, by now." |
Muslih & LaTashaThey met through a family-friend, who doubted that they'd hit it off. Muslih was reserved and pensive, LaTasha was an "all-over-the-place" dreamer.
Over the years, LaTasha has been a professional librarian, small business consultant, K-12 teacher, a non-profit manager and an organic foodpreneur. Muslih's interests are politics, World War II history and aviation. He is an entrepreneur in the healthcare sector and avid reader. Through his wife's adventures and projects, he remains the "voice of reason". Creating a life together despite their cultural and personality differences has been surprisingly hard. It has only been possible because of their commitment to serve God through their service and care for each other. It gets better with time - with love growing between them, in the unlikeliest of ways. They say: "Our marriage has been a beautiful experiment. We discover something new and useful about each other nearly every day. All of those things create the motivation to keep moving forward, because we need each other to bring out the best in ourselves." |
Umar & Melissa |
Umar and Melissa met and live in Maryland, with their four children. Much of their marriage has centered around creating the life they wanted for their children. Avid homeschoolers, they've enjoyed the challenges of fulfilling their children's individual educational needs.
Recently, Melissa decided that it was her turn to realize her dream of becoming a Certified Nurse Midwife. Though returning to school as a non-traditional student (a Mom and wife) was difficult, she credits Umar's unwavering support for making the challenge easier. They say: "When we started this journey, homeschooling was not a very popular choice, for Black families. We met a surprising amount of opposition to our non-traditional plan. We kept our vision front and center and marvel at how God makes what we need possible, every time." |
